Chelsea could make sensational new move for Monaco striker Falcao
Chelsea could be set to make a sensational new move for long-term target Radamel Falcao, according to The Express.
Falcao joined newly promoted French outfit Monaco earlier this summer in a £51m deal, but the principality outfit face hefty fines if some of their top earners are not sold immediately – including Falcao.
Indeed, the club are thought to face a £75m fine if they do not part company with the Colombian – paving the way for Chelsea to make their move for a player they have monitored for some considerable time.
Falcao has thus far made just two appearances for the club since his move from Atletico Madrid, but Monaco’s status as a tax-free club means the likes of 27-year-old are earning huge tax-free salaries – a luxury not afforded to other clubs in the French Ligue 1.
Their business strategy, which has exploited this fact, is considered an unfair advantage by other clubs and as a result they could be forced to change their status and sell some of their top stars. Cyrille Haddouche, who works for Le Figaro paper, told the BBC: “The advantage is huge in being able to convince huge players like Falcao to move to the club.
“So the tax advantage that Monaco is considered as unfair [by the clubs], especially in a period of economic difficulties for all clubs except Paris Saint-Germain.
“For example, former winners of the league, Lyon and Lille, must now sell players in order to reach break even.”
This saga is likely to be music to Jose Mourinho’s ears, as the Portuguese coach was also reported to want Falcao at Real Madrid during his stint in Spain. With at least a slight possibility of a move finally happening, Chelsea will want to act fast if they want to install their man before the end of the transfer window.
