Sturridge can be key for Liverpool, says Henderson
Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson believes that teammate Daniel Sturridge can be the club’s key man this season, and also make a large contribution for England, the Daily Express has reported.
Much of the talk around Anfield this summer has been about Sturridge’s fellow forward Luis Suarez, who has been the subject of two bids this summer from Arsenal. The Uruguayan is still serving a ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in April, which has allowed Sturridge to take over as the main striker.
The 23-year-old joined Liverpool from Chelsea in January, and so far has a highly impressive scoring record for the club, with 12 goals in 17 appearances, including the winner the Reds’ Premier League opener against Stoke City on Saturday. And Henderson thinks that Sturridge can be the top flight’s leading English scorer this season.
He said: “Studge has been great since he arrived here. He helped our season go on the up when he arrived. Both he and Philippe Coutinho were brilliant players for us in the second half of last season and hopefully they can just continue the way they finished the season.
“He has just got to keep working hard and doing the things he has been doing. If he does that he will be a fantastic player for Liverpool and England. If he keeps progressing he can be the top-scoring English player in the Premier League.”
