Tottenham close to Willian capture with Lamela next in line
Tottenham Hotspur are about to break their transfer record for the third time this summer, the Daily Telegraph has reported, as the Premier League club nears the capture of Anzhi Makhachkala playmaker Willian - and the spending will not stop there, as Roma forward Erik Lamela will follow shortly after.
The newspaper adds that if both deals are completed - with Willian’s move in the region of £30m and Lamela’s around £20m - it will take Spurs’ summer spending past the £100m mark, more than any other league club and greater than the estimated £99.4m outlay of Manchester City.
It had been speculated that Tottenham’s spending was contingent on selling Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world record fee but the Telegraph insist that is not the case - Spurs have recouped £23m in player sales and are expected to let Bale move to Spain, but the incomings are not connected to the potential outgoing and no cash-plus-player deal has been agreed, contrary to reports.
Willian is understood to be in London for his medical and has long been the subject of interest from Andre Villas-Boas, the Spurs Head Coach. Liverpool were thought to be close to the Brazilian’s signing before Tottenham gazumped the Merseyside club.
Villas-Boas wanted to sign Willian last summer and pair him with Lamela, and Roma’s sporting director, Walter Sabatini, was also in the capital this week although it was claimed he was there to speak with West Ham about the transfer of Marco Boriello. Sabatini replaced Tottenham sporting director Franco Baldini at the Rome club.
Spurs previously broke their transfer record for Paulinho, a £17m signing from Corinthians, and for Roberto Soldado, bought from Valencia for £26m. The likes of Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone and Steven Caulker have been allowed to leave White Hart Lane and could be followed by Jermain Defoe, Benoit-Assou Ekotto and Aaron Lennon.
