Chelsea out to hijack Tottenham's move for Willian
Chelsea have made a late attempt to snatch Anzhi Makhachkala playmaker Willian away from Tottenham Hotspur, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
Willian had already passed a medical ahead of his move to White Hart Lane but the interest from Chelsea has thrown a spanner in the works as Jose Mourinho pushes to have the Brazil international signed and sealed prior to the Blues’ meeting with Manchester United on Monday.
Talks are understood to have been held between Chelsea and the Willian camp, with the 25-year-old taking time to consider his destination - offering encouragement to Chelsea and potentially leading to Andre Villas-Boas missing out on one of his primary transfer targets of the summer.
Willian was viewed as a replacement for Gareth Bale, the newspaper claims, as Villas-Boas sought a creative midfielder to step in for the Real Madrid-bound winger. Spurs had previously gazumped Liverpool in the hunt for Willian after the Reds agreed a £27m deal with Anzhi, only for Spurs to push the price to £30m and force Liverpool out of the running.
