Atletico make loan move for Chelsea star Mata
According to the Daily Mail, Atletico Madrid are set to make a surprise bid to take Chelsea attacking midfielder Juan Mata on loan.
There have been rumours concerning Mata throughout the summer. Firstly, there were suggestions that he might be part of a deal to bring Wayne Rooney to Stamford Bridge. And now, with the imminent arrival of Willian, from Anzhi Makhachkala, and the emergence of Kevin de Bruyne, there are indications that Mata may not be first-choice this season.
Atletico lost star striker Radamel Falcao to Monaco this summer, and Mata has emerged as target, with Spanish newspaper AS reporting that they have sent an official to London to negotiate a deal for the 25-year-old.
Mata was signed by Andre Villas-Boas in 2011, and has been consistently impressive, making a total of 119 appearances in all competitions and scoring 31 goals, with his efforts last season earning the club’s Player of the Year award.
Barcelona are also thought to be monitoring Mata, who might be interested in a move, with a reduced role at Chelsea likely to end any hopes of a starting place for next summer’s World Cup.
