Mourinho gives Rooney deadline to leave Man Utd for Chelsea
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said Wayne Rooney must decide in the next 48 hours if he wants to leave Manchester United, BBC Sport has reported, after the sides played out a goalless draw in the Premier League.
United have insisted throughout the summer that Rooney is not for sale but Chelsea have made a series of offers for the England international, who started for the champions in the match against Mourinho’s team at Old Trafford on Monday evening. Mourinho claimed following the final whistle that it is up to Rooney to make the next move regarding his future.
“The person that started the story has to finish the story,” Mourinho said. “For the good of everyone it is time to finish the story. One way or another he has to say 'I want to leave' or 'I want to stay'.”
Mourinho also suggested that Chelsea were indirectly encouraged in their pursuit of Rooney by the player himself, Mourinho revealing that Rooney “told someone very important in his career” that he wanted to leave United.
“If you look at a manager like me, a club like us and the people who work at the club with me, we are not silly enough to try and get a player from a big club that doesn't want to sell,” Mourinho continued. “We are not silly enough to try something if somebody didn't start it.” The Portuguese then added it would be between 24 and 48 hours before Chelsea called off their approach for Rooney and focused on other targets, such as Anzhi Makhachkala striker Samuel Eto’o.
