Mata was rested not dropped for Man Utd match, says Chelsea boss Mourinho
Jose Mourinho has again insisted Juan Mata will not be allowed to leave Chelsea in the transfer window, Sky Sports has reported, with the manager explaining his thinking behind not calling on the Spain international for the goalless draw with Premier League champions Manchester United.
Both United and Arsenal have been strongly linked with a move for the two-time Chelsea player of the year, with the speculation appearing to be lent authority by Mata’s non-involvement in the Monday evening fixture. But Mourinho denied he was willing to sell Mata, saying: “There is no chance Juan goes. He had a very small pre-season after the Confederations Cup. And during that pre-season he was injured.
“He started training two days before we played the first league match. He played against Aston Villa and I decided to put him on the bench against United.”
Chelsea are understood, however, to be in talks with Porto over the signing of winger Christian Atsu, and are expected to sign Anzhi Makhachkala’s Brazil international Willian, which Sky Sports claim will only increase the doubts over Mata’s future at Stamford Bridge.
