Pellegrini to bolster Man City defence with Demichelis capture
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester City are close to completing the signing of Atletico Madrid central defender Martin Demichelis for a fee of £3.5m, after finding themselves short of defensive options.
After Matija Nastasic was injured in pre-season, and captain Vincent Kompany was ruled out for a month, Joleon Lescott was left as manager Manuel Pellegrini’s only available central defender. The Chilean was forced to start midfielder Javi Garcia at centre-back for Sunday’s game at Cardiff, something which contributed to a 3-2 defeat.
Demichelis only joined Atletico earlier this summer, and is yet to make a competitive appearance for them after arriving from Malaga, where he spent two years playing under Pellegrini.
He would be Man City’s fifth summer signing after a transfer window which has seen them spend around £90m. Midfielder Fernandinho, winger Jesus Navas, and striking pair Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo have all made the move to the Etihad Stadium this summer.
Demichelis, 32, spent several years with Bayern Munich before joining Malaga in 2010. With the Spanish side, he scored 10 goals in 103 appearances. He also has 37 caps for Argentina.
