Le Tissier criticises Bale’s Real Madrid salary
Tuesday 03 September 2013
Legendary Southampton striker Matt Le Tissier has hit out at Gareth Bale’s £300,000 per week wages, the Daily Express following the Welshman’s world record £85.3m transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid.
The deal for Bale, which was completed on Sunday, surpassed the £80m fee spent by Real to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to the Bernabeu in the summer of 2009. And the 24-year-old’s new weekly wage has been described as ‘obscene’ by former England international Le Tissier, who said:
‘Gareth Bale has become the world’s most expensive player at Real Madrid and good luck to him because he is a fabulous player. But the £300,000 per week wages it’s reported the Spanish team will be paying him seems an obscene amount of money to me.
‘No-one is worth that sort of money, not even Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, who can virtually guarantee you a goal a game. I’ve always said that a footballer is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay for him. But in the real world is Gareth Bale really worth a mind-numbing three hundred grand a week?’
In his long career with Southampton, where Bale began his career, Le Tissier’s highest salary was £4,000 per week, despite scoring an impressive 161 goals in 443 appearances.
