Man Utd failed in late attempt to hijack Ozil's move to Arsenal

Manchester United made a late move to try and steer Mesut Ozil away from Arsenal after it became clear their approach for Ander Herrera would not be successful, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Ozil moved to the Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day for a club record £42m but David Moyes enquired about taking the Germany international to Old Trafford as the Herrera transfer collapsed. United had originally been offered the chance to sign Ozil three weeks before the deadline by a group of third party agents, the newspaper claims, but passed on the deal.
Paris Saint-Germain also attempted to beat Arsenal to Ozil’s signature but the 24-year-old turned down the more lucrative offer from the French side in order to join the Gunners. Arsenal had begun their move for Ozil weeks before deadline day and it is thought that long-term interest was crucial in bringing Ozil to north London.
Ozil, who will earn around £140,000 has been welcomed to Arsenal by Theo Walcott, who admitted he was eager to line up with the playmaker. “It’s a fantastic signing,” Walcott said. “He has shown for his club and country that he is a fantastic player.
“It’s very exciting. I played against him with the Under-21s and we lost 4-0. He showed his qualities then. He has shown that for many years. I am looking forward to playing with him.”
