Wenger lacked faith in me, says ex-Arsenal forward Gervinho
Former Arsenal player Gervinho has accused Arsene Wenger of lacking faith in him, the Daily Mail has reported, with the Roma summer signing claiming that the manager’s absence of confidence is part of the reason why he struggled in the Premier League.
Gervinho joined the Gunners from Lille in 2011 in a transfer worth nearly £11m, but he failed to hold down a regular place at the north London club and moved on this summer, heading to Serie A after only nine league goals in his two years under Wenger. Gervinho has however blamed Wenger for his lacklustre performances, insisting the manager lacked enough confidence in his talents to give him ample playing time.
“I was not getting much time on the pitch and was in need of this time to improve and play my best football,” Gervinho said. “Wenger was not prepared to give it to me.
“Also my position on the wing was not what I was expecting and I wasn't happy with it, the 26-year-old continued, adding: “It would have helped had he shown more confidence in me.”
Gervinho made 46 appearances in the Premier League for Arsenal, 31 of them as a starter, featuring in a further 17 games in other competitions, netting an additional two goals. He has played two games for Roma thus far, starting once.
