Ozil worth Arsenal transfer fee, says Germany teammate Mertesacker
Arsenal’s German centre-back Per Mertesacker has claimed that Mesut Ozil will be worth every penny of his £42.5m transfer fee. According to the Daily Mail, Mertesacker is confident Ozil is worth what Arsenal paid for his compatriot after Gunners boss Arsene Wenger shattered the club’s transfer record to bring in the 24-year-old midfielder.
Ozil featured for Germany in their game against Austria in Vienna on Friday, demonstrating his flexibility by playing the remaining 30 minutes of the game as a striker.
Mertesacker though is just happy to have the highly-rated attacker at the Emirates Stadium. He said: “He is a top player and we are lucky to have him. I think he will fit in well here and he will play a huge role in the future of Arsenal.”
Ozil joined the North London outfit on deadline day from Real Madrid, after it is reported that he felt left out following the world record transfer of Gareth Bale to the Spanish giants. Now Ozil and Mertesacker could find themselves together in the Gunners’ starting XI against Sunderland at the weekend, in what would be the former’s Premier League debut.
