Hodgson praises England centurions Cole, Gerrard and Lampard
Tuesday 10 September 2013
England manager Roy Hodgson has praised the contributions of Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, BBC Sport has reported, as Lampard gets set to join his teammates as an England centurion.
Lampard is currently on 99 caps but Hodgson has confirmed the Chelsea midfielder will make his 100th appearances for the national team against Ukraine on Tuesday, becoming only the eighth player to reach the landmark but the third in the current squad. And Hodgson has revealed that having such experience on hand has made his job as England manager that bit easier.
“Having their reliability has been a godsend,” Hodgson said. “They are such reliable, consistent players. For me personally it has been a godsend, to be a year and a bit into the job and have those type of people with terrific experience of playing for England, to have experienced the highs and lows.”
Peter Shilton is the most-capped England player of all-time, having worn the Three Lions on 125 occasions, with David Beckham the most capped outfield player on 115. Cole and Gerrard have each appeared 104 times for England since making their debuts in 2000 and 2001 respectively.
Lampard’s England bow came in 1999 and Hodgson also applauded the commitment shown by the trio in making themselves available for international duty for so long and for the example they set. “I think you look at those three players and they have all done it at the highest level,” Hodgson said. “They're all Champions League winners for a kick-off. They must have God knows how many Champions League days behind them.
“They don't need an extra England cap and yet I know there will be no prouder or more willing England players here in Kiev than those three and that's a great example to the younger players,” the former Fulham, Liverpool and West Brom boss added. “If I was a younger player coming into the team and I saw those three I think they would put me on the right track.”
