Marica close to Arsenal move, claims agent
Thursday 12 September 2013
The agent of Romania striker Ciprian Marica has claimed the player is close to completing a move to Arsenal, ESPN has reported.
Marica is a free agent after leaving Bundesliga side Schalke in the summer and as such is able to join a club outside of the transfer window. The 27-year-old has previously been linked with Serie A sides Inter and Lazio, as well as a return to Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk and La Liga outfit Getafe.
Ioan Becali has said however that it is the Gunners who are in pole position to snap up his client. Arsenal attempted throughout pre-season to sign a new forward but ultimately failed, other than the free transfer capture of 20-year-old Auxerre striker Yaya Sanogo. Manager Arsene Wenger is said to want a more experienced option, however, to challenge Olivier Giroud for a place in the side.
“Marica is a really great striker who has already got experience in western European football and so it's natural that big clubs are eyeing his career,” Becali said. “He's close to joining Arsenal, but we have to wait for the next week.”
Formerly of Stuttgart, where he netted 30 goals in 133 games, Marica found goals harder to come by with Schalke, managing only nine in 52 appearances. He has also played for Shakhtar, between 2004 and 2007, and Dinamo Bucharest, where he started his career in 2001. Marica also has more than 20 goals for his country, winning over 60 caps.
