Ozil can help Wilshere improve, says Arsenal boss Wenger
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that he believes new record signing Mesut Ozil can help Jack Wilshere enjoy great success in a deeper midfield role, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
Ozil is set to make his Arsenal debut away to Sunderland on Saturday following his £42.4m move from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, and will play in an advanced midfield role in front of Wilshere, who Wenger thinks is more comfortable in deeper areas.
He said: “In midfield, Jack Wilshere is more comfortable in deeper positions and Ozil more in a higher position, that is why I don't think they conflict. I didn't always think that, but looking at Jack over the years now, he likes to come deep to take the ball and make a difference, and then give and go again. Ozil, though, is more behind the striker, higher up on the field.”
So far this season Wilshere has mainly played alongside Aaron Ramsey and Tomas Rosicky in the Arsenal midfield, while for England, he was often in more advanced positions than the likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard during the two recent World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.
Real Madrid’s decision to allow Ozil to leave was seen as shock by many, after he scored 27 goals and made 81 assists over three seasons at the Bernabeu.
