Rodgers believes Liverpool have more steel to show this season
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers feels his side will show their heart more often as the season progresses, the Independent has reported, as the Reds boss plots a return to the Champions League after an absence for the club of four years.
Rodgers returns to former club Swansea City on Monday evening with Liverpool unbeaten so far this season, winning each of their Premier League games through a single Daniel Sturridge goal. And the manager feels that while his players have already shown their resolute qualities this season, they will continue to do so as the campaign goes along.
But Rodgers is also keen the players maintain their passing principles, allied to the steel that has led to three slender wins. “I think that’s a part of the growth of the team,” he said. “These are characteristics we’re working on day in, day out, with exercises, on the pitch and off the pitch to improve that mentality.
“It doesn’t just happen. Sometimes when you come in as a coach with a philosophy and a certain way you want to play, people always think it’s just about the ball. And it’s not that.
“You’ve got to have the courage to play, to pass, but then you’ve got to have the steel, the will and the desire to win games. Over the period of time, that message has got through and over six or seven months or so, that’s proven on the field, Rodgers continued.
He added that while against Stoke his team had to grind out the points despite their impressive performance, the win over Villa was a tactical affair in the second-half, and the Manchester United victory was simply about the result, given the magnitude of the game.
“Hopefully, we’ll continue to show all those fighting qualities and there’ll be times when we’re better,” said Rodgers. “I said last year I thought the second half of the season would be better and I think we’ll see that again.”
Liverpool are one of two unbeaten teams in the Premier League thus far - the other are their Merseyside rivals Everton.
