Pellegrini praises Man City performance in Champions League win
Wednesday 18 September 2013
Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has hailed his side’s performance in Tuesday’s Champions League victory over Viktoria Plzen, where three second half goals saw off the Czech side, the Daily Mail has reported.
After a somewhat low-key first half display, Edin Dzeko, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero all struck in a 10-minute spell shortly after half-time, and the return of captain Vincent Kompany helped them secure a third successive clean sheet.
It was Pellegrini’s first away victory since taking charge, and while it gets their Champions League campaign off to a good start after failing to make it past the group stage in the previous two seasons, it gave them a boost ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby at The Etihad Stadium.
And Pellegrini said of the performance:'I think it is very important to start the Champions League winning away. It was not an easy match, against a very good team. Winning 3-0, of course we are very happy.
'In the first half we had three clear chances to score but in the second half we gave a bit more speed to our play and that was very important to create the space against a team that had 10 players behind the ball.
'It will give confidence for all the players. We have the derby next Sunday and always winning away in the Champions League, scoring three goals, having at least three or four more chances to score and a clean sheet - I think it will give all the players a lot of confidence for the next games.'
