Mourinho expects Chelsea to qualify despite defeat
Thursday 19 September 2013
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes his side can still qualify for the Champions League knockout stages from Group F, despite overseeing a 2-1 home defeat by Swiss champions Basel on Wednesday, Sky Sports has reported.
The Blues led at half-time thanks to Oscar’s low shot, but goals in the final 20 minutes from Mohamed Salah and Marco Streller eventually made them pay for a below-par performance. However, Mourinho, who has won the Champions League twice as a manager, remains optimistic that Chelsea can advance from a group that also contains Schalke 04 and Steaua Bucherest.
While he blamed himself for the defeat, Mourinho said: "The objective of finishing in the top two in the group phase and to go to the next stage of the Champions League is an objective that is not lost - far from it. It's an objective we're going to fight for and it's an objective that I believe very, very much that we're going to achieve.
"We lost three points that we must get somewhere. We must get them, (from) Basel, or Schalke, or Bucharest, or all of them, or some of them.’
The defeat was Chelsea’s first home reverse in the Champions League group stage for 10 years, and the second since Mourinho made his return to Stamford Bridge, after they lost at Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.
