Everton join rivals Liverpool in race for Derby’s Hughes
Thursday 19 September 2013
Everton are to enter the race to sign highly-rated Derby County midfielder Will Hughes, according to the Daily Express, with arch rivals Liverpool also after the 18-year-old.
Liverpool, after targeting Hughes during the summer, are expected to make a formal offer in January, with Derby expected to hold out for a bid of £6m or more, with Rams boss Nigel Clough admitting that it would take a substantial fee to force the Championship club to consider selling.
However, Brendan Rodgers’ side now face competition from the blue half of Merseyside, with Everton dispatching two scouts to watch Hughes in action during Derby’s 2-2 draw away to Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday, in which he helped set up a goal for teammate Craig Bryson, before he was substituted in the second half.
Hughes, who joined Derby in the summer of 2011, broke into the first-team early in 2012, and has since been a regular in the starting XI, going on to score three goals in 50 appearances in all competitions. He has also managed four caps for the England U-21s.
