Tottenham to face competition from Juventus and Napoli for Chelsea’s Mata
Thursday 19 September 2013
Tottenham Hotspur are to make another bid to sign Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata in the January transfer window, but will face competition from Italian sides Juventus and Napoli for his signature, the Daily Express has reported.
Andre Villas-Boas’ side were in the running to sign Mata in August, but they failed in their pursuit of the Spaniard, although they brought in highly regarded duo Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela from Ajax and Roma respectively.
However, Tottenham will resume their attempts to sign the 25-year-old in January, while Juventus and Napoli will also be in the running, with Napoli boss Rafael Benitez reportedly keen to reunite with Mata, whom he managed last season at Stamford Bridge.
Since Jose Mourinho returned to Chelsea in June, Mata has slipped down the pecking order, despite winning the club’s Player of the Year for 2012-13. So far this time around, he has made just two starts out of a possible six, with most of his appearances coming from the bench.
Mourinho added to the already considerable competition in attacking midfield during the transfer window, with the signings of Andre Schurrle, Marco van Ginkel and Willian, who added to Mata, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Frank Lampard, and Kevin de Bruyne.
