Poor start leads to Mourinho holding Chelsea crisis talks
Jose Mourinho is said to have held talks with senior Chelsea players over the side’s form after the Blues recorded a fourth game without a win following the Champions League defeat to Basel, the Metro has reported.
Mourinho is understood to have brought the Chelsea squad together after training on Thursday and called for an improvement in their performances ahead of the London derby with Fulham on Saturday evening, with the Portuguese coming under pressure to improve Chelsea’s recent form after consecutive defeats.
Chelsea lost in their last Premier League outing, away at Everton, before giving up a 1-0 lead against Basel to go down to a 2-1 defeat, with two draws in the games before the international break contributing to Chelsea’s sloppy start. Mourinho saw his side draw 2-2 with Bayern Munich in the UEFA Super Cup, eventually losing on penalties, and draw 0-0 with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Mourinho is thought to have told players normally considered among the first choice that he will not hesitate to drop them if they cannot pick up their form in coming matches. It is said by the newspaper that the manager’s message was well received, and that owner Roman Abramovich was made aware of the meeting, having spoken to the players himself following the Basel turnaround.
