Ozil can be the new Bergkamp, says Wenger
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that the club’s new record signing, Mesut Ozil, can become the ‘new Dennis Bergkamp’, the Daily Telegraph is reporting.
Ozil was signed for £42.5m from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, and has so far made two appearances. When asked if there were comparisons to be drawn between the German, and former striker Dennis Bergkamp, Wenger said: ‘Yes, he is a similar type. Dennis was maybe more prolific. Dennis was at first a striker but he created as well.
‘But Dennis’ evolution through his career was an adaptation to his physical qualities. When he couldn’t score anymore he became a great provider. I think Ozil, at the start, has more a midfielder’s mentality and Dennis, at the start, had a striker’s mentality. But he (Ozil) can score, yes.’
The 24-year-old is set to make his home debut for the Gunners against Stoke City on Sunday, as Arsenal aim for a seventh consecutive win in all competitions.
Bergkamp became an Arsenal legend after signing for the club for £7.5m in 1995, making over 400 appearances, scoring 122 goals as he helped win three Premier League titles and four FA Cups in 11 years at Highbury that ended with his retirement in 2006.
