Barcelona full-back emerges as Arsenal target
Arsenal are preparing a bid to sign Barcelona right-back Martin Montoya during the transfer window, the Metro has reported, with the 22-year-old reportedly keen to leave the Nou Camp.
Montoya is Barcelona’s second-choice right-back behind Dani Alves, and although the Spanish giants rate him highly, a lack of regular football has left him looking for a move away. The Spaniard has refused a contract extension, and could be available for £3m, as he is in the final year of his current deal.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is expected to be busy in January as he attempts to add to a thin squad which is being further depleted by injuries. Bacary Sagna has been the club’s first-choice right-back since 2007, with Carl Jenkinson currently providing the competition, but Wenger has serious interest in signing Montoya.
The former Spain U-21 international, part of the team that won this year’s European Championship, has made 37 appearances for Barcelona’s senior side, and has scored two goals. Other than Arsenal, Montoya has also been linked with a move to Inter.
