Van Persie could return to Man Utd team for Liverpool fixture
Robin van Persie could be fit to return to the Manchester United team to play Liverpool in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday, ESPN has reported, after the striker sat out the 4-1 Premier League defeat by near neighbours Manchester City on Sunday.
A groin injury meant the Netherlands international missed his first league game in two-and-a-half years and without him, United were overwhelmed at the Etihad Stadium, going four goals down before Wayne Rooney struck a late free-kick in consolation. Manager David Moyes has confirmed however that van Persie was close to being able to play against City, and should be ready to face the Reds in midweek.
“We thought Robin would be okay,” Moyes said. “We gave him every chance. It's nothing serious. He could be involved on Wednesday or next weekend. Moyes expanded on van Persie’s fitness in his post-match press conference: “I don't think it is going to be long. He just felt something in his groin in training. We didn't want to aggravate it.”
Van Persie has 36 goals in 54 games for United following his summer move from Arsenal in 2012, and Moyes admitted the potency offered by the former Gunners captain was lacking at Eastlands. “Obviously you miss van Persie,” Moyes said. “He is a huge miss to anyone but we have got a strong squad.”
