Chelsea to name second choice team worth over £100m in Capital One Cup
Tuesday 24 September 2013
Jose Mourinho will change his entire XI for the Capital One Cup trip to Swindon Town the Daily Mirror has reported, but the cost of the side picked by the Chelsea manager will still top the £100m mark as the likes of Demba Ba, David Luiz and Juan Mata are handed opportunities to impress.
The newspaper claims that as well as Ba, Mata and Luiz, Mourinho will give starts to Cesar Azpilicueta, Michael Essien and Willian, alongside home grown talent Ryan Bertrand, who himself cost £125,000 from Gillingham in 2005, in a team that cost £137m to assemble.
Should Mourinho choose to rotate his selection so massively it will mark a change in his approach to the League Cup from his first spell as Chelsea manager, when the Mirror notes he previously selected his strongest possible side in an attempt to forge a winning mentality at Stamford Bridge. The League Cup was the first trophy Mourinho won as Chelsea manager, in 2005, with a second League Cup arriving in 2007.
Mourinho has said the match at Swindon’s County Ground is a chance for the second string players to force their way into his plans for the Premier League and Champions League fixtures to come as Chelsea prepare to play four consecutive away games. “You continue to change when you play Basel, then you play Fulham, then Swindon. It's normal,” Mourinho insisted.
He added: “Against Swindon, it will probably be good to play with some of these boys to get them confidence - if we play well. But it is the type of game that can betray you. It can give you confidence or take your confidence.
“If we play well there, it will be a good game to play these boys. Naturally I have to make some changes and wait for some players to say, 'I am you first choice - compulsory.' Some of the others, when they don't have strong effective performances, it's normal we have some doubts. This is the process.”
According to the Mirror, the probable Chelsea team and their price tags is:
Mark Schwarzer (free); Cesar Azpilicueta (£7m), Tomas Kalas (£5m), David Luiz (£25m), Ryan Bertrand (£125,000); Michael Essien (£24.4m), Marco Van Ginkel (£8m); Willian (£30m), Juan Mata (£23.5m),Kevin de Bruyne (£7.2m); Demba Ba (£7m). Total: £137,225,000.
