Caulker believes Tottenham are title challengers
Tuesday 24 September 2013
Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker feels his former club Tottenham Hotspur should be considered among the challengers for the Premier League title, Sky Sports has reported.
Caulker came up against his old team on Sunday and could not prevent Spurs leaving Wales with a 1-0 victory, clinched by Paulinho’s late goal, and feels that having seem them up close, not only are Tottenham among the contenders to win the title, but they are a better team this season than they were last despite the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
“With the players they have brought in and the squad they have got, they should be achieving things,” Caulker said. “They have spent a lot of money and when teams spend that amount of money you expect big things from them.
“It's slightly different there now. Without Bale they did not have that threat - but they have other players who came in and looked strong. I thought their movement up front was great.”
Spurs overhauled their squad through the summer, signing the likes of Roberto Soldado and Christian Eriksen, as well as Paulinho and Erik Lamela, who was brought in late in the transfer window. Caulker added that the attacking threat Spurs carry through the new boys will trouble any opposition this season.
“With the money they have spent they have got great players with a lot of movement,” Caulker continued. “They have got Soldado and Eriksen running off and you have got to be focused. When you bring on a £27m-plus player in the last minute, like Lamela, it is going to be difficult. With the money they have spent they will all cause teams problems.”
