Villas-Boas delighted with Tottenham depth in Capital One Cup win
Wednesday 25 September 2013
Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas has praised the depth of his squad after recording a convincing win over Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup, Sky Sports has reported.
Villas-Boas had previously complained that his side had to face their second game in three days but after ringing the changes, saw two goals from Jermain Defoe and one each for Paulinho and Nacer Chadli dispatch Paul Lambert’s side 4-0. “It was a great performance and a great response from the team,” Villas-Boas said.
“We came here with three players who played that game (against Cardiff on Sunday), so it was a risk, but we have great strength in depth,” the Portuguese added. “We have great team spirit this year and all the players are buzzing for opportunities like this so I think most of them really, really performed out there.”
Villas-Boas was able to call on the likes of former Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel and new signings Vlad Chiriches and Erik Lamela, as well as Germany international Lewis Holtby and goal scorer Defoe. The former Chelsea boss went on to say he was particularly impressed with the players’ approach to the competition: “We have that strength in depth to be playing after just two days, so we use it.
“What is so good about this evening is that the players responded in the right spirit and a great sense of responsibility towards the competition and did extremely well.”
