Man Utd boss Moyes maintaining interest in Herrera
Manchester United manager David Moyes has not lost interest in Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera, the Daily Telegraph has reported, despite a failed attempt to sign the midfielder late in the transfer window.
Herrera has a £30.5m release clause in his contract but Moyes was unwilling to pay the fee, while the complex nature of La Liga’s release clause - and the short time left to complete the deal - was also a factor in the move breaking down. The newspaper also claims there was doubt at Old Trafford over Herrera’s readiness for the United first team.
United scouts will watch Herrera at Granada next week in an effort to gain more information on the 24-year-old and he may have been watched by a party from the Premier League champions against Real Betis on Thursday, the Telegraph adds, as Moyes continues his attempts to bolster the midfield he inherited from Sir Alex Ferguson.
Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini followed Moyes out of Goodison Park and to United but the manager has said recently that his squad still requires additions, including in midfield, that can go straight into the starting XI.
Herrera began his career at Real Zaragoza, making his debut for the first team in 2009 and playing 82 times in total before moving to Bilbao in 2011. He has yet to represent the senior Spain team but has been part of the La Roja set-up up to Under-23 level.
