Tottenham vs Chelsea - Premier League preview and team news
Andre Villas-Boas takes on his former mentor, Jose Mourinho, for the first time as a manager when his in-form Tottenham Hotspur team take on Chelsea at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham sit second in the Premier League behind rivals Arsenal on goal difference, and they look to have found an extra dimension with the impressive form of new signing Christian Eriksen, while Paulinho is also beginning to shine. Since the international break, Tottenham have won four consecutive games without conceding, so confidence should be high for the visit of the Blues.
Last week’s victory over Fulham helped silence the critics after two straight defeats, but some observers remain sceptical about Mourinho’s selection policy, with Juan Mata often left on the bench. Unlike Fulham, who were focused on containing Chelsea, Tottenham should give their defence a much sterner test.
Villas-Boas is likely to make several changes to the side that won at Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday, although Jermain Defoe continues to show impressive form when called upon, scoring six goals in three starts. Younes Kaboul is injured, while Aaron Lennon, yet to feature this season, will have a fitness test.
Fernando Torres might be given the nod for Chelsea after a man of the match display at Swindon in midweek, but Mata is likely to lose his place. Ramires is unlikely to feature after picking up an injury at the County Ground, while Marco van Ginkel will miss most of the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.
