Fans backing Chelsea more when Mata plays
Betfair has announced news of data which suggests that fans have more faith in Chelsea to win matches when Juan Mata is on the pitch, despite him not being first choice under manager Jose Mourinho.
While he has received the club’s Player of the Year award in each of the past two seasons since joining Chelsea in the summer of 2011, Mata has made just three starts so far this season in all competitions, and he was left out of the squad altogether by Mourinho for their most recent Premier League game against Fulham.
And Betfair’s information shows that fans are much less confident to bet on a Chelsea win when Mata is not on the pitch, with 60% cashing out on their bets involving the Blues when he has started on the bench compared to 40% when he came on in those matches.
Furthermore, more statistics provided to A Different League suggest that there is a more significant pattern when Mata starts, with 70% cashing out on bets involving Chelsea when Mata was brought off compared to just 30% if he remained on the pitch.
Mourinho’s preference so far has been to play Eden Hazard, Oscar and Andre Schurrle behind the lone striker, with Mata being told to adapt to his style. However, this data shows that fans are more inclined to doubt Chelsea when Mata is not on the field.
