Man Utd interested in signing Porto's Mangala
Manchester United have entered the race to sign FC Porto’s 22-year-old defender Eliaquim Mangala, as they look for a long-term replacement for Rio Ferdinand, according to the Guardian.
United currently have several options in central defence, but first-choice pairing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are both over 30 and both have suffered issues with their fitness in the past few years. There is also speculation that this could be Ferdinand’s final season at Old Trafford.
Mangala, who has a £37.8m buyout clause, has just left his agent and is highly sought after, with Man Utd’s Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester City reportedly monitoring the French international, along with the two richest clubs in Ligue 1, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain.
He joined Porto from Belgian side Standard Liege in the summer of 2011, and he has gone on to help them to two league titles, the second of which as Invincibles, scoring six goals in 54 appearances and also gaining considerable experience in the Champions League. His form has also seen him earn his first cap for France, in a friendly against Uruguay in June.
