De Bruyne future in doubt at Chelsea
The future of Belgium international Kevin De Bruyne at Chelsea is in question after manager Jose Mourinho left the winger out of the Premier League squad to play Tottenham Hotspur and the Champions League squad to play Steaua Bucharest, the Daily Mail has reported.
De Bruyne has also been told to train with the club’s Under-21 squad for the early part of the week after Mourinho felt the 22-year-old performed poorly during Chelsea’s win over Swindon Town in the Capital One Cup. De Bruyne started the season among Mourinho’s first choice players but has struggled to hold down a place of late and, if the situation persists, could ask for a loan move in January.
Borussia Dortmund wanted to sign De Bruyne over the summer but the player was convinced to stay at Stamford Bridge by Mourinho, the newspaper adds. That has made De Bruyne all the unhappier over his treatment in the past few days, as he feels he needs to play regularly to cement his place in the Belgium XI ahead of the World Cup.
De Bruyne joined Chelsea from Genk in 2012 but was immediately loaned to Weder Bremen in the Bundesliga. He returned to English football at the end of the season and has thus far made four appearances for the Blues, without scoring.
