Napoli boss Benitez praised by Arsenal counterpart Wenger
Arsene Wenger has told a press conference ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League meeting with Napoli on Tuesday that the coach of the Italian side Rafael Benitez is a ‘top class manager’, reports the Daily Mirror.
Benitez took the Napoli job in the summer and has made a good start to his reign, taking the team to second place in the early Serie A table, despite previously having an unhappy time in Italy with Inter. Despite his short-lived tenure at the San Siro, Benitez has enjoyed great success during his managerial career.
His list of trophies include two La Liga titles and a UEFA Cup with Valencia, while in England he famously won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, and the FA Cup the following year. More recently he won the Europa League as interim manager of Chelsea, in spite of his unpopularity among Blues supporters.
And ahead of Benitez returning to England, Wenger said: “He's a top class manager, he's proven that. When you face one of his teams they are always difficult. Yes, people were tough with him but he did very well. I think in the end, in time, people will realise he has done well.”
