The 10th annual FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC) gets underway this week and players are being offered the chance to get closer to the World Cup than ever before with the Grand Final of the competition taking place in Brazil, host nation of World Cup 2014.

There are 20 places in the Rio de Janeiro showpiece, the first time the Grand Final has taken place in the same country that will host the World Cup itself, but with 2.5m players entering last year’s tournament the competition is expected to be fierce. French star Bruce ‘the machine’ Grannec won the 2013 edition in Madrid, claiming the $20,000 prize and a ticket to the Ballon d’Or event in January, where he will meet the world’s greatest players as a special guest.

Former Brazil international Ronaldo wished all entrants luck and compared the FIWC to the trophy he claimed with the South Americans on two occasions: “To be crowned a FIFA World Champion is an incredibly special moment,” Ronaldo said. “Usually this honour is limited to the very best professional football players.

I think it’s fantastic that the FIFA Interactive World Cup makes that dream a possibility for football fans all over the world and I’m looking forward to experiencing the event next year in Rio.

The FIWC takes place on the PlayStation Network with EA Sports’ FIFA 14 game. It is an official FIFA tournament organised by the governing body in conjunction with presenting partners EA Sports and PlayStation.

A ceremonial first game of the FIWC 14 tournament was played at the Maracana by Brazilian FIWC champion Andre Buffo, a past Grand Finalist, and 2014 FIFA World Cup Official Mascot Fuleco.

The 20 Grand Final contenders will travel to Brazil and take in a game at the World Cup while there, and for the first time ever there is a Community Qualifier position - the player with the best win/loss ratio over a minimum of 30 games will be given a place at the event. The other qualifiers come through the online tournament’s six separate 1-month-long seasons, with the top two players from each season heading to Rio.
