Fans deserve credit for Arsenal form, says Wenger
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has thanked the club’s supporters for their part in the Gunners’ excellent recent form, Sky Sports has reported.
The Frenchman believes the fans have created a positive atmosphere around the club which has propelled the team to a run of 10 games unbeaten, a stark contrast to scenes at the very start of the season after Arsenal lost on the opening day of the Premier League at home to Aston Villa.
But since the defeat to the Midlands side, Wenger has overseen a lengthy run of good results, with Arsenal top of the Premier League and well-placed to qualify from their Champions League group. “The more you build that confidence up with the results, the more you go into the next game thinking 'let's just do it to win the game’,” Wenger said.
“What is positive is that the team plays better when the environment is positive. We played in a sceptical environment last year and that does not create a great level of confidence,” he added.
“What has changed recently for sure is that our environment is positive, our fans believe in us again. That of course is very important if we want to be successful. I have said many times that I feel it is important for the team to feel that the fans stand behind the team.”
Arsenal meet West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, having beaten the Baggies on penalties in a Capital One Cup match in September. Wenger went on to say that as far he is concerned, part of his role is to meet the expectations of the fans.
“It is my job to make the fans happy,” Wenger said. “I feel I do that if they stand behind the team, because that gives you the feeling that they have done something right.”
