Chelsea clinch signing of Porto defender Otamendi, reports in Spain claim
Reports in Spain have claimed Chelsea will sign Porto defender Nicolas Otamendi at the end of the current season, beating away competition from Barcelona and Milan, the Daily Express has reported.
Marca has said that both Barca and Milan wanted to sign Otamendi during this summer’s transfer window but were frustrated in their efforts - and will be again next year as the Blues have moved into pole position to snap up the Argentine centre-back. Porto are said to be resigned to losing the 25-year-old, with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho thought to be a long-standing admirer.
Otamendi has been a Porto player since 2010 and was already an international when bought from Velez Sarsfield, having been given a senior debut by then-manager Diego Maradona in 2009. He has gone on to win 15 caps for the South Americans.
The newspaper report from Spain added that Mourinho has specifically targeted Otamendi, asking the Chelsea hierarchy to deliver the player to Stamford Bridge in time for next season. Should Otamendi move to west London he will be in competition for a place with Gary Cahill, David Luiz and captain John Terry.
