Cardiff vs Newcastle - Premier League preview and team news
Newly-promoted Cardiff City, who have made a good start to life in the Premier League, take on a Newcastle United side looking for a reaction after two consecutive league defeats.
Victory at Fulham last week, secured by Jordon Mutch’s wonderful stoppage time strike, made it eight points from a possible 18 for Malky Mackay’s team, a decent return as they have had some challenging games. The two big summer signings, Steven Caulker and Gary Medel, have settled in well and are proving very effective, making Cardiff a difficult team to play against.
Newcastle improved in the second half at Everton and despite two goals, the damage was already done after a poor first half performance in which the defence offered little resistance. Alan Pardew remains under pressure, and although more than one player has promised an improvement at the Cardiff City Stadium, it all comes down to whether they can produce it on the pitch.
Striker Andreas Cornelius is unlikely to be risked by Mackay, who is likely to stick with the same team which got the better of Fulham.
Newcastle are likely to still be without injured pair Steven Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez, but Yohan Cabaye, who started on the bench at Everton, should return to the starting XI.
