England waiting on Cole as Chelsea left-back suffers rib injury
Ashley Cole will undergo a scan to determine the extent of the rib injury that forced him off during Chelsea’s win over Norwich City at Carrow Road on Sunday, the Daily Mail has reported, with England manager Roy Hodgson particularly concerned with news from the test ahead of the World Cup qualification double header to come in the next week.
Jose Mourinho revealed after the 3-1 win against the Canaries that Cole has been carrying the injury for a while, but it came to a head in the second-half against Chris Hughton’s side and Cole had to be substituted, holding his side and moving with discomfort as he left the pitch.
But far from hoping Cole misses the international fixtures in order to keep him fresh for club duty, Mourinho insisted he wants Cole to join up with the national team if at all possible. “He had something in his ribs that we need to assess, but hopefully it’s fine,” Mourinho said. “I want England to do well and my players to play for their national team. I will be there on Friday to push as I would love England to go to the World Cup.”
England first play Montenegro Friday and then meet Poland on Tuesday, both games being played at Wembley, needing positive results to secure a place at the World Cup in Brazil 2014. The Mail speculates that should Cole be ruled out of the matches, Everton’s Leighton Baines would be the natural replacement.
