Arsenal face missing out to Monaco on Barcelona's Valdes
Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has suggested he will ignore an approach to join the Premier League with Arsenal and instead sign up with Ligue 1 side Monaco, the Daily Mail has reported.
Valdes has previously confirmed he will leave La Liga at the end of this season when his contract with Barcelona comes to an end, 11 years after he became an established figure at Camp Nou.
The Spain international revealed that he would like to again play with Eric Abidal, the former Barcelona defender who joined Monaco in the summer. “Playing alongside him again would be special,” Valdes said of Abidal, who recovered from a kidney transplant to return to football.
Barcelona have already lined-up Valdes’ replacement, Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, for a £6.75m fee, the newspaper claims. Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, currently on loan at Napoli, could also be a target, as back-up to Germany international ter Stegen.
The current Arsenal No.1 is Poland international Wojciech Szczesny, with Emiliano Viviano, signed on loan from Palermo in the summer transfer window, as back-up. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger can also call upon Szczesny’s compatriot Lukasz Fabianski.
