Walker backs Tottenham teammate Townsend to star for England
Kyle Walker believes his Tottenham Hotspur teammate Andros Townsend could steal the show for England at the World Cup next year - assuming England qualify, Sky Sports has reported.
Townsend made a spectacular senior debut against Montenegro on Friday, scoring once and having a hand in another of England’s four goals as Roy Hodgson’s side moved to within one win of qualification for Brazil 2014.
And Walker is hopeful that Townsend will travel to South America as part of the squad, adding that his natural game causes headaches for opposition defenders. “I hope this is just a stepping stone for him to showcase his talent and go on to do big things,” Walker said.
“He is a nightmare,” Walker added. “He eats, sleeps and breathes football. He is really confident and you could see that against Montenegro. He just wants to get at players. As a defender you don't want a right winger who is left-footed running at you, it's dreadful, and he is confident to go either side.”
Walker is out of the match against Poland on Tuesday due to suspension, with Phil Jones or Chris Smalling expected to deputise at right-back, meaning Walker can focus on a return to club action at the weekend, where he will again line-up with Townsend. The winger has had nine loan spells away from Spurs, finally establishing himself in the side this season.
