Harry Redknapp's 5 Worst Signings
Harry Redknapp has a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best managers when it comes making bargain signings in the transfer market, but some have not been quite so successful. These are his five worst signings:
After two and-a-half successful years at Everton in which he helped the Toffees reach the 2009 FA Cup final, Pienaar made the move to Tottenham Hotspur in January 2011. At White Hart Lane, first-team appearances proved to be very rare as the South African found himself a long way down the pecking order with Redknapp often unwilling to rotate his squad, and he was soon back at Everton.
In 1995, Harry Redknapp signed Marco Boogers despite having never seen the Dutchman play while at Sparta Rotterdam. He ended up making just four Premier League appearances for West Ham United, and even now he is widely regarded as one of the worst players to ever grace the division.
At Blackburn Rovers, Samba had established himself as one of the Premier League’s top defenders. However, when he joined Redknapp’s Queens Park Rangers in January 2013 following a spell at Anzhi Makhachkala for a club record £12.5m, it led to internal disputes about his salary, and his performances on the pitch were undoubtedly poor. After relegation in May, he rejoined Anzhi.
After he scored nine goals in a season at Liverpool, Redknapp brought Camara to Upton Park in 2000, and the Guinean vowed to score many goals as a first-team regular for the Hammers, but it failed to turn out that way. Camara stayed for three seasons, leaving in 2003 after making just 11 Premier League appearances, and did not score at all in any competition.
Following a successful trial, Khumalo, who represented hosts South Africa at the 2010 World Cup, Tottenham agreed a deal to sign Khumalo in January 2011. He remains a Spurs player, but has never made an appearance for the club, despite being 26 years of age. A long way down the pecking order, he has been shipped out on loan four times, the latest of which to Doncaster Rovers of the Championship.
