Scotland vs Croatia - Match preview and team news
Scotland’s 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign comes to end on Tuesday as they take on Croatia at Hampden Park.
Having once again failed to reach a major tournament for the first time since 1998, the focus has long been on building for Euro 2016. There have been some encouraging signs since Gordon Strachan was appointed, however, the most significant of which being the shock victory that they achieved in Croatia.
That result is something to build on, as are the decent performances they put in against Belgium at home, and in the defeat to England at Wembley in August, and there are indications that their fortunes could improve in the foreseeable future.
Despite that, Scotland still could finish bottom of the group, as they currently sit just a point clear of Macedonia. Strachan does not have many injury problems to contend with, with only Jordan Rhodes and Lee Wallace being forced to pull out. Steven Hammell of Motherwell has been called up as Wallace’s replacement.
Not much is at stake here for the visitors, who are already assured of a play-off place. Comfortably lying second with 17 points, their hopes of qualifying automatically for their first World Cup since 2006 were dashed by Belgium, who defeated them on Friday.
