Begovic best in Premier League, says Stoke chairman
Stoke City chairman Peter Coates has insisted there is no better goalkeeper in the Premier League than Asmir Begovic, reports ITV.
Potters No.1 Begovic has been linked with various top English sides over the last few years and recent reports suggested Spain’s Atletico Madrid and Italy side Napoli were interested in the shot-stopper.
Coates has no surprise that Begovic is attracting top clubs, but is reluctant to sell the keeper. “I feel he's as good as anybody in the Premier League,” Coates said. “I don't know anyone who is better.
“You always have to be realistic about these things. If a call came from a top European club and was attractive to him, then you have to look at it. It wouldn't be much of a surprise to me and that's why we have contingency plans in place with other goalkeepers at the club.
“We would be reluctant to sell him because you want to keep your best players, but equally you are realistic about things. You also have to consider the player's view.”
Begovic has made exactly 100 appearances for Stoke and has impressed since joining the Potters in 2010. The former Portsmouth man had loan spells at Macclesfield Town, Bournemouth, Yeovil Town and Ipswich before arriving at the Britannia Stadium.
Begovic was voted Stoke City Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Coaches Player of the Year in 2013. The Bosnian international was also voted Bosnian Footballer of the Year in 2013, capping off a successful year for the 26-year-old.
Bosnia-Hercegovina are currently top of the Group G table, sharing the same amount of points at Greece, who are second in the group. Bosnia face Lithuania on Tuesday, needing to match Greece’ result against Liechtenstein to qualify, barring an unlikely 17-goal swing.
