Man Utd midfielder search lands on Koke
Wednesday 16 October 2013
Manchester United manager David Moyes is considering a £16m January transfer window approach for Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke, ESPN has reported.
The 21-year-old was previously on the radar of Moyes’ predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson, and his form in the new season has seen interest from Old Trafford resume. Koke has helped Atletico to second in the early La Liga table, behind Barcelona, while at international level he is already viewed as a successor to Barca playmaker Xavi Hernandez.
Koke appeared in both of Spain’s games over the international period, coming on as a substitute against Belarus and Georgia as the World Cup holders sealed their place in Brazil 2014 with two victories. He made a late entrance against Belarus, in place of Cesc Fabregas, and came on for Xavi shortly after the hour mark in the win over Georgia.
Barcelona are said to be rivalling United for the signature of the Atletico youth product, with his contract containing a release clause of £16m. United had attempted to snare Koke’s compatriot, Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, by similar means, only to be frustrated. ESPN claim Herrera’s form has dipped at the start of the season, causing United to turn their attention back to Koke, a young veteran of more than 100 appearances for his club.
