Aston Villa manager Lambert to decide on Benteke fitness
Wednesday 16 October 2013
Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is to talk with striker Christian Benteke on Wednesday, to decide if the Belgium international is fit to return for the meeting with Tottenham this weekend, the Daily Express has reported.
Benteke was forced off with a hip injury in the away victory over Norwich on September 21 and has not featured since. He was part of the Belgium squad for the recent World Cup qualifiers but did not play any part; however Villa are hopeful he will be fit for the Spurs tie.
The former Norwich boss said: “Benteke trained for the last couple of days for Belgium and was on the bench for the Wales game on the basis he has felt pretty good. Belgium never had to use him so I'll find out. He seems to be not too bad.
“I got our medical people to speak to theirs over the last couple of days, as you do with every player, to make sure they have come through the game OK and it seems everybody's not too bad.
“Benteke has trained and had no reaction. That might change when he gets back - we'll wait and see. I trusted him to be honest - which he is. That's all you can do, trust somebody to do the right thing."
The 22-year-old signed for Villa in August 2012 on a four year deal for a reported fee of £7m, and went on to score 23 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions in his first season. Benteke has found the net four times in five games in all competitions so far this season, coming after he handed in a transfer request this summer before agreeing a new long term deal with the Midlands based side.
Villa currently lie 10th in the Premier League, and play host to Tottenham at Villa Park this weekend.
