Pellegrini told Man City players Man Utd had won
Micah Richards has revealed that Manuel Pellegrini told his players Manchester United had won at Old Trafford before Manchester City faced West Ham at Upton Park, writes ESPN.
The City boss informed his players United, who conceded a last minute equaliser to Southampton, had taken all three points at Old Trafford in an attempt to lift his team before the match against the Hammers.
City went on to win the game 3-1, and Richards believes Pellegrini’s reverse psychology helped his team get the three points. “We thought they were winning 1-0. The manager said they had won, Arsenal had won and Chelsea had won, and so we had to win,” Richards said.
“Maybe it was a bit of reverse psychology but it was obviously nice. United will come strong. We just knew we had to win. If we had dropped points, well...We watched Liverpool because they kicked off early,” he added.
Pellegrini’s side now sit fourth in the Premier League, but Richards says it will be tough to catch an in-form Arsenal side. “They looked strong and Arsenal just keep winning. I know people always say Arsenal will blow up, but when a team gets that confidence going it's hard to stop and they will do well this season,” the England international predicted.
Richards is also refusing to rule out rivals Manchester United’s title hopes, despite the absence of Sir Alex Ferguson, who won 13 league titles with the club. “They still have the same players,” he said. “They have massive experience and experienced players around who will get them going. So I have no doubts that United will come back stronger from this.”
