Coloccini to miss Newcastle-Sunderland derby
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has revealed that defender Fabricio Coloccini will miss Sunday's Wear-Tyne derby against Sunderland, Sky Sports has reported.
The centre-back has an ongoing groin problem and will not be risked in the north east derby, which presents a defensive crisis for the Magpies' manager. Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was sent off at the weekend and will therefore face a one-match ban, and the ex-West Ham manager will be hoping Steven Taylor overcomes a knock to fill the void left by Coloccini.
The 52-year-old admits the Argentine will be a big miss in such a important game. He said: “Colo definitely won't be available for Sunderland. We think Steven's going to be okay. He was touch and go to train last week but we just held him back. Losing Colo is like Liverpool losing (Steven) Gerrard. It's a huge blow for us. We all know that.”
In the absence of the club captain, midfielder Cheick Tiote is likely to wear the armband, with the combative player being chosen ahead of Frenchman Yohan Cabaye in the last game. The former Southampton boss explained the decision: “Cheick Tiote, by far, was our best player in my opinion. He was brilliant. I was really pleased for him. We need him at that level.
“If we hadn't had the incident at the start of the season (when Cabaye pushed for a move elsewhere), he would have been captain. I told him he wasn't captain. Was he upset? No. He accepted it and played great. I'm pleased for him.”
Newcastle will be looking for revenge on Sunday following last season's drubbing at home to their arch rivals, who are still to register a win this season.
