Tottenham winger Townsend vows to keep feet on the ground
Andros Townsend has insisted he will not let his new-found status as an England international and Premier League regular with Tottenham Hotspur change who he is as a person or a player, the Daily Express has reported.
Townsend broke into the Spurs first team at the start of the season and impressed with his performances under Andre Villas-Boas sufficiently to win a place in Roy Hodgson’s England team, making his debut against Montenegro, scoring, and then playing in England’s win over Poland as qualification for the World Cup was confirmed.
The winger, who was sent out on loan nine times by Tottenham, can scarcely believe the progress he has made this season. “Obviously, you dream, but I never dreamt I would be playing week-in week-out for Tottenham as well as having two caps for England,” he admitted. “It’s been fantastic. The messages of support have been unbelievable. I can’t thank the public enough.
“I try to have fun and make things happen, try to take people on, try to get the crosses in, and have some shots. And the last few games it has come off for me,” he said of his style of play.
“I’ve got a good family,” Townsend went on. “They won’t let me get ahead of myself. I have seen it before where players have had great starts to their international careers and then they have faded. I can’t let that happen to me.
“I live for football. I am not one of those that goes out drinking or partying. It’s only about football for me. On a Saturday night, I go home and watch the Spanish football on TV,” he continued.
“I’ve had to wait a long time to get my chance in the spotlight. I’ve had nine loans in the lower leagues, so I’m not going to get carried away. I want to stay at the top for as long as possible.”
Townsend spent time on loan at the likes of Yeovil Town, Leyton Orient, Leeds United and Birmingham City before Villas-Boas included him in the Spurs first team for this year, with his goal against Aston Villa his second for the club this season.
