Rooney wanted Man Utd to sign Ozil, Ferguson reveals
Sir Alex Ferguson was urged to sign Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for Manchester United by Wayne Rooney before Arsenal tied down the German, the Guardian has reported.
Ferguson, who also talks about Rooney’s desire to leave United in his book, revealed the striker challenged him to sign Ozil when he nearly left for Manchester City in 2010.
The former United manager admitted Rooney was frustrated having been left out of the side and substituted on the final game of last season and “wanted away” from the club.
Ferguson described Rooney as “sheepish” during the confrontation that the Scot thought Rooney had been “programmed in what he was trying to say.”
Despite revealing the conflict, Ferguson was also in awe of Rooney’s natural ability and revealed United tried to sign the former Everton man at the age of 14 and 16.
Ferguson also revealed he found it hard to imagine the England forward later in his career. “With that kind of physique it was hard to imagine him playing into his 30s,” Ferguson wrote.
Talking about Roy Hodgson’s decision to give Rooney a week off before Euro 2012, Ferguson added that Rooney was not the sort of player who would benefit from a holiday.
“He would receive no leniency from me. I would hammer him for any drop in condition,” writes Ferguson, and concluded on Rooney by saying he hoped to see “more great performances from him at Old Trafford.”
