Schalke win just the start for Chelsea, says Torres
Wednesday 23 October 2013
Fernando Torres believes Chelsea’s Champions League win over Schalke will kick-start their season, Sky Sports has reported, with the Blues claiming the victory thanks to a Torres brace and a goal from Eden Hazard.
Torres scored in both halves to help Chelsea to the top of Group E after three games played, with home matches against Schalke and Steaua Bucharest to come in two of their final three group stage fixtures. Torres argued taking the lead early on - in the fifth minute - set the stage for a comfortable evening with only a few minor scares. “We were lucky to score the first goal early so we could play the way we wanted, but they had their chances,” Torres said.
“In the second half, individual quality made the difference and we could have scored more goals,” the Spain international continued. “We've got six points away from home which is good for us. Now we have to play Schalke again at home so we're in a good position.”
Torres feels Chelsea’s squad is gradually adapting to the methods of manager Jose Mourinho and that the true Chelsea will be seen as the players gradually attune to the demands of the Portuguese boss. “It's a young squad with a new style and a new manager, so it takes time to settle,” Torres said. “But we're still improving and will do until the end of the season.”
The 29-year-old was making his 100th start for Chelsea in all competitions since his January 2011 move to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool, having featured a total of 141 times when substitute appearances are included. Torres has scored 39 goals in his Chelsea tenure, including four in 10 games this season.
